RIP Yahoo Messenger As It Is No More Live: Goodbye, to Yahoo Messenger! As it shutdown After Twenty Years. | DigiWeb Trends

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Yahoo Messenger was launched in 1998 by Jerry Yang and David Filo
  • Yahoo Messenger can no longer be accessed by anyone
  • Users can save chat history until November
Initially, Yahoo! was launched in 1998 as Yahoo Pager, after that the service was rebranded as Yahoo Messenger on June 21, 1999.

Internet messaging service Yahoo Messenger finally shuts down on Tuesday, July 17, after being operational for about 20 years(1998-2018). The announcement of putting the beloved messenger at rest had come earlier in June, and it has been finally shut down. If you ever used the platform and would love to revisit those memories, you have six months to download your chat history. According to Yahoo's blog post, while its Messenger service will not work, Yahoo Mail and Fantasy will continue to function as usual.

Yahoo was generally known for its chat rooms during past time where people would talk and do endless gossips to each other in Group Chats. Even you could meet random people on Chat Room and exchange email IDs. Most of the time, these were fake email IDs that people would use to talk to random strangers. It gave rise to the common creepy term ASL which stands for Age, Sex, and Location.

The reason for shutting down the app is not yet known, and as of now, there is no information about any replacement. If at all there is any replacement, it beats my curiosity why it will be shut down before any replacement is made public.

However, Yahoo has offered an alternative, Yahoo Squirrel, which is an invite-only group messaging application. Yahoo Squirrel is still in its beta stage. Those who intend to join could request for an invite through squirrel.yahoo.com.

During that time, Yahoo Messenger was the easiest and best platform to log into, where we could just chat with each other for hours without worrying about the bills and send each other those cute emoticons. And if you had a webcam, things were even better as you could see each other. This was probably the closest you could come to going on an actual date or spending time together. Oh! the number of Yahoo Messenger dates I’ve had.

While those days are clearly gone, with people being able to constantly keep in touch, thanks to the tons of applications available online now like WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, if you ever used the Yahoo Messenger and would love to revisit those memories, you have six months to download your chat history. To do this, go to the Yahoo site and sign in. Select a verification method, then enter the Account Key. Click Download, enter the email where you want the chat history file sent, click OK, check your email for the file, and download it from there on to your device.
At last, we say adieu to Yahoo Messenger with a heavy heart and will always cherish the memories it gave us.
